Biography

Canadian pianist Carl Zhang has won top prizes in numerous esteemed competitions, including the Concours de Musique du Canada, Concours de musique Sorel-Tracy, Concours de musique de Sherbrooke, Concours Clermont-Pépin, and the Concours Gustav Mahler.

Born in China, he grew up speaking Mandarin. After immigrating to the french part of Canada, he learned the language through his schooling and picked up English through immersion, while Spanish was also part of his academic education. Since settling in Austria, he has also learned German and Cyrillic diction for vocal repertoire.

His technical foundations were formed in Montreal through his studies with Jimmy Brière at the University of Montreal (UdeM), where he focused extensively on the solo piano repertoire. Through an exchange student in Canada, he discovered the Swiss pianist Dominique Weber, whose poetic approach to the piano and inspiring teaching left a strong impression on him and eventually led him to pursue further studies in Switzerland. He later continued his training with the late Dominique Weber at the Geneva Haute École de Musique (HeM), where he further refined his solo repertoire and began cultivating a strong interest in the lied repertoire. During this time, he reached the finals of the Mahler Song Competition despite having had no prior formal training in song accompaniment.

After completing his studies in Switzerland, Carl began a PhD at the University of Montreal with a focus on the music of the revered Viennese composer Franz Schubert. During an exchange year at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his plans to return to Canada. Faced with uncertainty, he decided to remain in Vienna with his wife and daughter. While in Vienna, he pursued a third Master’s degree in Lied accompaniment at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna under the guidance of the late Justus Zeyen.

Having been very active during summers, he has participated in numerous masterclasses and received guidance from many world-renowned pianists, including Dang Thai Son, Jacques Rouvier, Anne Le Bozec, Anne Quéffélec, Marc Durand, and David Lutz.

A few recent projects as an accompanist include performing at the Hofburgkapelle in Vienna with the Cantachiaro Choir and serving as accompanist for advanced students at the Suzuki Festival in Mürzzuschlag.

Carl has performed internationally in countries including Canada, Iceland, Spain, Switzerland, and Austria. Today, he performs regularly in Vienna both as a soloist and in collaboration with singers and instrumentalists, while also teaching piano, coaching singers, and accompanying musicians at various stages of their musical development.
